By tram 22 to the Castle

The official site recommends tram 22 to the stop Pražský hrad: turn left and, according to the site, in 5 minutes you reach the Second Courtyard. Another way is tram 22 to Pohořelec and then down the hill, which the site puts at 10 minutes to Hradčany Square, with an entrance from the Fourth Courtyard. Tram 23, a historic line with vintage trams, also stops at Pražský hrad; it runs by day only, so check its timetable on the PID site.

By metro and the Old Castle Stairs

From Malostranská on metro line A, the official site says to follow the tram line, turn left after 100 metres to the Old Castle Stairs and climb to the gate Na Opyši. A more demanding route starts at the Malostranské náměstí tram stop and climbs the New Castle Stairs to Hradčany Square and the Giants’ Gate. In the summer season you can also take tram 22 to Královský letohrádek and cross the garden past the Royal Summer Palace, which the site puts at 15 to 20 minutes to the Riding School.

We have not measured walking times from the stations ourselves; the times above are those of the official site.

From the airport and the main station

From Václav Havel Airport, the public transport operator lists trolleybus 59 to Nádraží Veleslavín and then metro A (about 35 minutes), bus 100 to Zličín and then metro B (about 45 minutes) and the Airport Express AE to the main station (about 45 minutes; a special fare that is not covered by the 24 or 72-hour tickets). The old bus 119 has been replaced by trolleybus 59.

From the main station, Praha hlavní nádraží, take metro C to Muzeum and change to line A towards Nemocnice Motol for Malostranská or Hradčanská.

Public transport tickets

Single and short-term tickets for Prague are sold at machines and in the PID Lítačka app. A paper ticket must be validated once before you enter the metro platform or when you board a tram or bus. Public transport tickets do not include admission to the Castle. Check fares, timetables, tram changes and notices on the PID site before you go.
